- Markus Flasch, head of BMW's M division, confirmed multiple engine and transmission details about the 2020 M3 to Car magazine in an interview.
- BMW plans to build rear-wheel-drive and stick-shift versions of the new M3, in addition to all-wheel-drive, automatic-transmission models.
- Flasch also confirmed horsepower figures for the new M3's twin-turbocharged inline-six.
In the run-up to the newest BMW M3's unveiling, currently slated for the Frankfurt auto show in September, we've maintained that the sport sedan would offer a stick shift. But that was mostly speculation—now, thanks to an interview BMW M boss Markus Flasch gave to Car magazine, we have confirmation that there will be a manual transmission offered for the G20-generation M3. Flasch also elaborated on other M3 details, including its drive layout and engines.
From the mouth of Flasch himself, he says this about the 2020 M3 (and, by extension, its eventual two-door M4 sibling): 'Drivetrain-wise, think about the M5's all-wheel-drive system—we are able to put it in the M3 as well. It'll be very similar. But we will also do rear-wheel-drive cars, purer ones, too, and a manual stick shift.'
We surmise that the M3 and M4 will get the fancy all-wheel-drive system from the one-size-up M5 sedan, which has a rear-wheel-drive mode that disconnects the front axle. But it sounds as if there will be a version of the M3 without the all-wheel-drive setup at all. We'll take our rear-wheel-drive, high-horsepower sport-sedan shenanigans where we can get 'em, be it a dedicated rear-drive M3 or one with a rear-drive mode built into its all-wheel-drive setup.
Other juicy M3/M4 details spilled by the M boss included horsepower figures for the 'base' and Competition engine tunes. Entry-level M3/M4 models will have 473 horsepower, while the Competition trims will belt out 503 ponies. Flasch says that those figures will be made by a twin-turbocharged inline-six pulled straight from the upcoming X3 M and X4 M crossovers. Exciting stuff, particularly given that the Competition models will measure up well against the Mercedes-AMG C63's twin-turbo V-8 output, as well as the V-6s in the Audi RS5 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Look for more M3 and M4 details to emerge as the 2019 Frankfurt auto show draws nearer.
Update on 9-3-2015 by Miles Branman: We reached out to BMW to confirm whether its online configurator was accurate in excluding manual transmissions from the options list of its 2016 228i, 328i, and 428i models. A spokesperson for the automaker has informed us that these vehicles will, in fact, still be offered with manual transmissions. Say it ain’t so, BMW!
Bavarian Motor Works is evidently yielding to poor sales figures for its manual transmission-equipped models and has pulled the standard option from three 2016 models, according to the German automaker’s online car configurator.
The 2016 BMW 228i, 328i, and 428i appear to only be available with ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions. Of course, that leaves the higher-output 235i, 340i, and 435i versions available with a six-speed manual, but each of those variants are heavier (and more expensive) than their turbocharged four-cylinder counterparts.
Of course, BMW isn’t the only automaker to remove the row-your-own-gears option from its model range, but it’s especially hard to see a brand that prides itself on the best driving experience cutting out such a great gearbox.
Advanced automatic gearboxes will continue to improve over time, with near-instant shifts in a lighter package, but the engagement of driving a manual, especially when you aren’t concerned about the quickest lap time on a track, will be sorely missed.
Bmw Manual Transmission Models 2019
One bright spot is that BMW’s 2016 M3 and M4 can still be had with a manual, though recent news that BMW’s M division will be trimming the fat on manual-equipped models in the near future puts those cars’ standard gearboxes on notice as well.

Among its competitors, BMW still offers the most models with manual options, with Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Audi all limiting their manual gearbox vehicles to a tiny handful. However, it looks as though in five years, the enthusiast community will be lucky if there’s a single performance sedan or coupe available with a no-cost manual transmission.
